Tonight sees the return of ‘The Great British Bake Off’ to our television screens (on BBC One at 8pm).
Now in its sixth season #GBBO (as aficionados like to refer to it!) has changed the shape of baking in the UK.
Out go the styles and recipes of Fanny Craddock, Mrs Beeton and Delia Smith and now we look to Lorraine Pascale, Heston Blumenthal and Nigella Lawson and a whole host of previous GBBO season winners for our baking inspiration.
One baking legend though has sustained, nay, has been reborn as our British Baking Guru…Mary Berry CBE.
As a nation we’ve grown to love the double act that is GBBO’s Mary and Paul (Hollywood). They, along with genuine down-to-earth contestants and comedic commentary from from duo Sue & Mel, have inspired us to take to baking in our droves with the baking industry now reportedly being worth in excess of £3.4 billion (I don’t know if that’s just the recipe books and kitchen gadgets we have in our kitchens or for the nation as a whole!!).
It’s now cool to like baking. It’s no longer just a job for the wife of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s but a showcase of skill, organisation, creativity and persistance. We’ve male bakers (who’d have thought it!) and GBBO has brought amateur bakers out of the closet from all walks of life – prison officers, doctors, home makers, vicars and engineers, anaesthetists and body builders.
We’ve even got junior bake offs, celebrity bake offs, sport and comic relief bake offs, and our affection for baking has spread around the globe with nearly 20 countries replicating the TV format of the show. Britain also has it’s very own national baking week (October 17th – 23rd).
The Great British Bake Off has really transformed our views of baking. We love that each competition, each season, they challenge competitors to excel with core breadmaking and baking skills, old and new techniques, classic and international recipes, and of course their own creativity for the showstopper (we love a good showstopper!)
We don’t always get to do all that much ‘baking’ in the Appetite for Adventure kitchens with our specialty being outdoor BBQ and Grills but we love how it has inspired so many of us to get back into the kitchen in one way or another as we hear constantly of charity, local, corporate and family bake off competitions.
